Getting Bhutan Visa (International Tourists)

All visitors to Bhutan (except Indian, Bangladeshis and Maldivians) requires visa and it must be processed prior to their arrival in Bhutan.

Tourist planning to visit Bhutan must book their holiday through a licensed Bhutanese tour operaties who will apply for Bhutan visa through online system to Tourism Council of Bhutan on their behalf.

For visa application, all the visitors must mail a scanned copy of passport (photo page) with a minimum validity of 6 months and wire transfer the total cost of visiting Bhutan including visa fee. Tourism Council of Bhutan monitors the transferred tour costs for the purpose of issuing visa clearance. Tour operators can access to money only after completing the tour.

Once the above requirements are fulfilled, Tourism Council of Bhutan will issue a visa clearance letter to respective tour operators on behalf of their guest within 72 working hours. This letter will be then mailed to respective travelers by their tour operators. On producing visa clearance letter at the port of entry, the actual visa will be stamped on the passport.

Getting to Bhutan

Travelers to Bhutan can take a flight to its only international airport located at Paro (PBH). Currently, only two airlines, Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines operates in Bhutan and these two airlines fly to the following international destinations:

Due to limited numbers of flight, it is advisable to book your flight to Bhutan at least a month or two earlier during peak season (March, April, May, September, October and November).

For those entering via raod from India have three entrance points; Phuntsholing bordering with Indian state of West Bengal and Gelephu and Samdrupjongkhar bordering with Assam.

The nearest Indian airport to Phuntsholing is located at Siliguri, Bagdogra (4 and half hour drive) and the nearest railway stations are NJP junction, Siliguri (4 hours drive), New Alipur Daur (1 hour 30 minutes drive) and hasimara junction (45 minutes drive).

The nearest railway station to Gelephu is New Bongaigaon (1 hour 30 minutes drive).

The nearest Indian airport to Samdrupjongkhar is located at Guwahati, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (3 hours drive) and the nearest railway  station is Rangiya junction (1 hour drive).
